A Sanctuary for Birds and Wildlife
Bundala is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory waterbirds. The sight of greater flamingos gracing its wetlands remains one of the park’s most breathtaking attractions. The park’s landscape is enriched by its waterholes and six expansive lagoons: Bundala Lagoon (බුන්දල), Embilikala Lagoon (ඇඹිලිකල - 430 hectares); Malala Lagoon (මලල කලපුව 650 hectares); Koholankala Lagoon (කොහොලන්කල කලපුව - 390 hectares); Mahalewaya Lagoon (මහ ලේවාය - 260 hectares).

Despite its beauty, Bundala faces threats from invasive plants like Prosopis cineraria (කලපු අන්දර) and Opuntia dillenii (කටු පතොක් or spiny pest pear cactus), which jeopardize the park’s native flora and fauna. Additionally, the influx of excess water from paddy fields under the Kirindi Oya Irrigation and Settlement Scheme has significantly altered the lagoons, resulting in a drastic decline in aquatic species such as shrimp and crab.
