intro

Bundala National Park acquires a very significant place in Sri Lankan archaeology and it is the first ever Ramsar site in Sri Lanka too. But this park is less visited. The oldest artifacts of a prehistoric establishment in this island was found from the sand dunes of Bundala National Park. The carbon dating of those artifacts has placed them in about 125,000 years. The park is characterised by interconnecting canals, marshes and the adjacent sea coast surrounding. The terrain is generally flat with sand dunes and sparse dry evergreen scrub.

The greater flamingos are one of the main attractions in Bundala National Park. This is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. This is a biosphere reserves of UNESCO as well. The park harbors 149 species of birds and over 15,000 sea birds during the migratory season. The national park still harbors few elephants too.
