Leave the city behind and enter the forested hills of Pilikuththuwa.
At the foot of the mountain, the historic temple complex stands beside a small lake. From here, a forest trail leads uphill through massive granite formations, ancient caves and rock shelters.
With a professional archaeologist as your guide, the landscape begins to reveal its history.
Natural rock shelters become ancient monastic spaces. Carefully cut drip ledges protect the caves from rainwater, while Early-Brahmi inscriptions provide evidence of Buddhist activity here more than two thousand years ago. Later temple buildings, Kandyan paintings and other architectural features reveal how the landscape continued to evolve.
Water is an important part of the story. The lake and ancient water features offer clues to how a Buddhist community could flourish within this secluded rocky environment.
The trail continues through forest and uneven terrain towards Dig Gala, where the landscape suddenly opens into a spectacular western panorama. On a clear day, Colombo’s skyline can be seen on the horizon, while aircraft descend towards Katunayake Airport.
At the summit, pause for a simple taste of Sri Lanka — a traditional local drink and snack enjoyed in the forest above the ancient landscape.
