Leave the city behind and enter the forested hills of Pilikuththuwa.

At the foot of the mountain, the main temple complex stands beside a small lake. From here, trails climb through dense woodland, where caves and rock shelters are scattered across the hills among massive granite formations, giant Entada vines and abundant nutmeg (Myristica fragrans).

Natural rock shelters become ancient monastic spaces. Carefully cut drip ledges divert rainwater from caves. Early-Brahmi inscriptions record the dedication of caves to the Buddhist Sangha. Later temple buildings, a reclining Buddha and Kandyan paintings add further layers to this extraordinary landscape.

Water is central to the story. The lake and other ancient water features help explain how a Buddhist community could flourish within this secluded rocky environment.

Into the Forest

This is not a conventional temple visit.

The walk follows uneven trails through bushes, over rocks and up the hillside, with caves and archaeological remains appearing along the way.

At Dig Gala, near the top of the mountain, the forest suddenly opens into a spectacular western panorama. On a clear day, Colombo’s skyscrapers can be seen on the horizon, while aircraft descend towards Katunayake Airport.

And here, at the top of the mountain, we pause for a simple taste of Sri Lanka: a traditional local drink and snack, enjoyed in the forest above the ancient landscape.

It is a remarkable contrast — ancient caves beneath you, Colombo on the horizon and aircraft crossing the sky above.
