Explore one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable wreck dives at the site of HMS Hermes, the Royal British Navy’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier. Sunk during a Japanese air attack on April 9, 1942, this historic wreck now rests off the coast of Batticaloa as both a fascinating dive site and a moving Second World War memorial.

Lying deep beneath the Indian Ocean, the wreck has transformed into a thriving artificial reef covered in coral and surrounded by abundant marine life. Divers may encounter large tuna, grouper, jacks, and schools of reef fish moving through the remains of the carrier. The site is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary technical dive experiences.

Accessible during the calmer months of the east coast diving season, the HMS Hermes wreck offers a unique combination of history, adventure, and underwater biodiversity for experienced technical divers.
